Learn Danish - Copenhagen Danish courses

About link2danish
An active social life in a new country is vital in order to feel settled and integrated. It is important that you feel part of the community in order to feel at home. Career and professional incentives might be the main reason for coming to Denmark, but it is important to establish a good social life to settle in.

Many Danish people speak English well, but a lot of expats have realised that learning Danish is key to inclusion. English might be fine at work, but to feel comfortable in all aspects of life it is important to learn Danish to be able to communicate with people. This applies to lunch breaks at work, but also to private life outside of the work environment. Furthermore, learning a new language can illuminate the culture and customs of the people who speak it.

Learning a new language can be a challenging process and in many situations you will be judged on your language. Language is power and personally you might feel a loss of prestige when you are unable to express yourself as well as in your native language. It is therefore important to attend a language course, and with the help of a professional Danish instructor, to achieve an efficient progression, to become aware of your own style of learning and to maximise your potential to learn Danish.

In order to feel at home it is also important to gain insight into the culture at work as well as in the culture in society as a whole. Some examples:

Why don’t people talk to each other on the bus?
Why do people go home straight after work?
How is Danish irony to be understood?

Why are there so many meetings at work?

When you come to a new country it is important to gain knowledge of the culture. But it is equally important to be aware that your own cultural background and experiences influence the way you experience the new culture. From time to time you will wonder about things, and these things will vary depending on your own cultural background. Openness and curiosity about the new culture are crucial in order to become part of it. And it is important not to give up, but to enter into dialogue about the things that you wonder about. Communication is the means to the end goal – inclusion.

link2danish can contribute to better language skills and cultural inclusion at your workplace and in Danish society in general.
